It's my understanding that the officers pay is for representing members in disputes when they are signed off work.

Now the top officers, who knows what they do to earn that sort of pay.

The officers pay from the union is pay for officer time that the employer doesn't pay. For example:
Once a month all executive board officers are marked off their jobs to meet at the union office for their monthly meeting. This is paid for from union money not by the employer.

Our Union picnic, Officers where marked off from work to help with the picnic. This was paid with union money.

There are events that happen when the officers represents members and are paid by the employer not the union. This is way some members see their officer asking a manager to sign a time slip for them. When you see that it means the employer is paying that officer and it is not coming out of union money.

At my Property, LTD (try to keep in in mind every property is different by contract), the District pays for nothing with the exception of a couple of committee meetings (safety and employee of the month) I cannot speak for others but what you have posted, is my lost hours, or hours I would have worked as a driver had it not be for union obligations (if need be I would be happy to break down all of my obligations on my property). Now, because I am on the extra board as a driver, I end up at a loss since when record my Mark off I enter nearly all of my days at eight hours or less, where, had I worked my regular shift on the board, I would normally get 10 to 12 hours on average. Never mind the calls I get at all hours of the day, weekends, etc. This is lost time I never get back. And there is more than that to fit in one post.

So what other questions do you have my Brother? My questions for you:
(1)Do you feel I should execute my duties as EBO at a personal financial loss? (Many of my members don't seem to thinks so in fact more than a few have requested that I be available full time-as in-be a full time officer)

(2)Is your purpose for posting this information(which is readily available for anyone) to serve your own political agenda?
Because to me, it would seem If you were really seeking information for information's sake and not trying to throw numbers up there in an attempt to sensationalize, you could just ask YOUR own e board officer, right? You have appeared in front of the board on your issues in the past so you could voice your concerns there.

And since it says post a comment above I will:

While I do not appreciate you posting my union earnings for all to see (legal or not), While its classless and politically motivated move and While what respect I had for you before (yes we met a couple of times) is gone-I have no regrets about the hard work I and my fellow officers have dedicated and continue to dedicate to the membership.

Brian does bring up a very good point about properties other than TriMet. Roy Jennings, Brian Pasquali, Ken Richins, Terry Howard and Anna Tompte are all non TriMet officers. The TriMet officers (that I have now indicated with a red TriMet) are paid many times by TriMet and receive their run pay and do not lose hours like their fellow union officers from other properties. At first when I posted this, most of my questions had been based on a TriMet employee view. I do understand now that Brian is losing out on work opportunities just by doing his job as an EBO and that brings more questions to the table. To be protecting this membership and losing pay is not correct and that needs to be addressed. There are ways the membership can protect their officers from loss and all that needs to be done is to bring it to our attention.

I do want to answer your questions:
1) I DO NOT feel that any officer should have any loss for protecting the membership.
2) My own political agenda? I do have some agenda’s and they can be viewed both personal and political. Personally and politically I want the union that I am a part of to be transparent to all members including myself. Well informed and educated members make a stronger union.

I have appeared in front of the executive board and I was excused from the board with no resolve just justifications on how others are discriminated against and there is not much that can be done. Lucky enough a phone call to TriMet from ACLU prompted I quick change in contractual language so at least for now members are protected on 1 of the 42 “issues”. I will continue to fight for these victims and I might not win for them but they have seen the change in the contract and they know it is because someone had listened and stood up for them.

You state the information is readily available for anyone then tell me you don’t appreciate my posting of union earnings for all to see? So if information is readily available it is better not to point it out and to just let members find it for themselves?

You have made it clear that you feel I am classless, politically motivated, a sensationalist and that you have lost what respect you had for me. Many officers are showing a similar pattern of response when a member does or says something. You might just be stating simple facts or trying to use a form of intimidation. Either way it is clear that you are not happy with my actions and you are more than welcome to be displeased with me. I do apologize for not being aware that you are losing pay possibilities for protecting our membership and I do appreciate the hard efforts you put in for those members you have protected. You and I have had very little conversation and hardly know each other. I am sure my desire for transparency is going to upset others as well.

This union brother does respect you!

I am little surprised at the reaction of Mr Pasquali!

Why would he be upset at all over the disclosure of a public document?

Unless of course he has something to hide!

This is good work, as far as I'm concerned, and I'm glad it's posted.

But what's the original source? I didn't realize union officials' pay was public.

Chris Day said...

Yes Department of Labor. it is all public information... It is a little tricky but I will try to point it out to you. http://www.dol.gov/olms/regs/compliance/rrlo/lmrda.htm This link is the start then click on Union Search. The next page that opens there are only two fields to worry about Union Name and Designation Number. don't worry about any other field. Then click the submit that is almost at the top not the one at the very top.
I hope that helps if you have any problems feel free to contact me.

Thanks, Chris! Got it. Great tip.

Look at these salary changes over time: https://spreadsheets.google.com/a/portlandafoot.org/ccc?hl=en&key=tR1ZzI110BsZZLV5XoQy3fA&hl=en#gid=0

Officer compensation does seem to be growing rapidly, even as the number of represented workers has shrunk. Presidential compensation, for example, is up 83% since 2000 -- it's like a 6.2% annual raise every year. Total officer compensation is up 74% (like a 5.7% annual raise).

Any idea why?

Hey your numbers are very interesting and both Al and I are very interested in learning more. Is there a chance we can meet up an learn about these numbers you are presenting?

Michael Andersen said...

I'd be happy to, Chris, but I wouldn't have much to say -- I just pulled them off the link you gave me. I've posted a summary to the Portland Afoot wiki: http://portlandafoot.org/w/Amalgamated_Transit_Union_Local_757#Rising_compensation_for_officers

Drop me a line (michael at portlandafoot.org) if you'd like to set something up.
