What is the right amount?

In a private chat area for ATU757 members a discussion about reducing our union officers pay rate by 20%. It was expressed that a 6 digit income was too much for an officer to be making. I was asked if I was supportive of the cut and I wanted to know more reasons for the cut proposal. The main response I was getting back was that a candidate should run for office for the membership not the pay. With this understanding I than asked why just 20% why not just have a lateral move and maintain the same pay that the person was at as an employee? No pay increase or decrease would clearly demonstrate that the person was purely interested in just the membership’s needs being met.
It appears that many welcome the idea of a 20% cut but not liking the idea of staying at the same pay. What does this say about the interest of that person? Is it for the membership only? Is it self-interest only? Or is it a little of both? The question I have is how much is one person willing to sacrifice for the membership?
